The Sky Is Falling is a 2001 novel by Sidney Sheldon.The main character to this book is Dana Evans, an anchorwoman for the press, who was also featured, though not as a main character, in another of Sidney Sheldon's book, The Best Laid Plans.
The story starts off with a prologue, a mysterious auction that involves a huge amount of money. Dana Evans had just came back from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is rushing to a meeting with the last member of the Winthrop family, Gary Winthrop. The story starts to get complicated when, a few hours after the interview with Dana, Gary Winthrop was shot and killed by some thieves who were, supposedly, stealing some paintings - the rest of the Winthrop family were killed in a series of suspicious "accidents" a few months beforehand. Although most viewed this tragic row of events as accidents, Dana was the exception. Taylor and Madeline Winthrop, Gary's parents, perished in a fire that burnt down their house, Paul Winthrop died when his car drove off a cliff, and Julie Winthrop died in a skiing accident. Dana couldn't believe that accidents had wiped out one of the most prominent families in the world. She began to investigate, delving deeper and deeper into the family's secrets.
Meanwhile, Kemal, the crippled boy (he only has one arm) Dana found in Sarajevo, caused trouble and launched into fights at school, because some bullies, mainly a boy named Ricky Underwood, kept insulting Dana. Dana was called to school a couple of times to manage Kemal. Kemal was finally expelled after he hospitalized his tormentor, Ricky.
Jeff Connors, Dana's fiance, is also occupied, looking after Rachel Stevens, his ex-wife, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Rachel is a model, one of the highest paid in the world, and was Jeff's wife for 4 years. Due to Dana's investigations, and him taking care of Rachel, they postponed their wedding to a later date.
Dana couldn't find anything remotely suspicious about the Winthrop family and was on the verge of giving up when she unexpectedly stumbled upon a case against Taylor Winthrop, while searching the internet for apartments for her, Jeff and Kemal. The case was filed by Joan Sinisi and was later dropped for some mysterious reason. Dana soon found out that Taylor Winthrop paid a huge settlement for the case to be dismissed. To Dana's astonishment, Joan refused to talk about the case, and asked her to leave. When Dana finally persuaded Joan to tell her, Joan "accidentally" fell down from her balcony and died. Her death was ruled out as an accident, even though its impossible for her to fall out of her balcony accidentally, due to a four foot wall preventing it. The maid taking care of Joan left after the "accident", to visit her family.
As she, determined despite the dangers, followed her leads, Dana befriended Roger Hudson was a former senate leader and billionaire who had some strange connection to Taylor Winthrop, and his wife, Pamela Hudson. They helped Dana a lot on her investigation, although Roger Hudson was very uncomfortable when Dana started talking about Taylor Winthrops. Dana became friends with the couple when Kemal broke an extremely expensive vase, she'd been forced to take Kemal with her when he got into major trouble at school, and the Hudsons told her not to worry.
She also made an enemy of General Victor Booster, head of the FRA, when she interviewed him. He screamed himself hoarse, insulting the media and told her to leave before she even got ten words out. Booster's aide, Jack Stone, became her friend when he helped her out, by warning her off Booster's abruptness and anger towards the media.
Dana had known that there was a strange link between the murder of Taylor Winthrop and Russia. To find the link she traveled all the way to Moscow to meet the Russian commissioner Sasha Shahandoff. But he was not ready to talk to her anything about the winthrops.However Boris Shahandoff, his brother was about to say something but every time Sasha made him quiet. Also Dana had faced a few threats to her life in Moscow and felt somebody following her. Finally she returned back to Washington. Soon she received a note that someone from Moscow wanted to share with her the mystery about Winthrops.She shared the information with Hudson family and asking them to take care of Kemal she left for Moscow. There she met Sasha Shahandoff, who agreed to tell her the mystery.
Sasha took her to an underground city called Kyranosk-26.To her utmost surprise, the city was 600 feet below mountain and was like a complete city. The city was completely cut off from the outside world. It was the city where plutonium was being produced by Russia to an extent that a nuclear bomb can be made in three days. Knowing this Taylor Winthrop thought to make use of situation. Persuading the white house, he got himself appointed as the ambassador to Russia and started selling plutonium to China, Pakistan, Iran etc and started making too much money. However one of his partners wanted all the money for himself. So he killed the entire Winthrop family so that no trace could be found. But Sasha did not name the partner and asked her, if she would help him get out of Russia, as there were threats to his life in Russia and then he would tell the partners name. He gave her address and told her to keep the secret and discuss her plan then.
Dana knew no one in Moscow, so she asked Hudson to arrange for something for Sasha Shahandoff. Hudson told how he would make the arrangements. But when Dana went to Sasha’s place she found him dead. She was shocked. When she came out of the apartment, a gun was aimed at her from the top story of the building on other side. However she missed it as a bus came in between. She ran for her life .Trying to set link between events, she realized that except Hudson no one knew about Sasha!!
She called Jack stone telling him that she doubted Hudson and asked her to take care of Kemal till she was back. However, there she again faced life threats and came to know that Jack stone was also involved. Some how she managed to reach back to Washington but when she reached there Kemal was not there.
She received a call from Hudson to be at their place, if she wanted Kemal to be alive. She rushed there; where caeser, Hudson assistant was asked to take her away n kill her. By that time Jeff and Matt Baker (Dana’s Boss) had come to know of the situation. They reached there and managed to save Dana and killed Caesar. Kemal who was locked in school basement was put on fire. Jeff managed to save Kemal as well.
The same moment the Hudson had planned to leave the country. Their plane was just about to take off, when General Victor Booster, getting to know the situation asked the plan not to be allowed to take off. However the Hudsons inside asked the pilot to take off at gun point. It had just flown high in air when it got blasted and smiling back in the fields was Boris Shahandoff !!!
